Studiare la fotografia
Studiare la fotografia significa addentrarsi in un territorio vasto dove a guidare il tuo percorso è più una questione di gusto e personalità che di percorso di studi come qualsiasi altro settore.
Scegliere di approfondire una specifica tipologia di fotografia ti permette di fare parte di una nicchia o di un vasto gruppo che ti aiuta a crescere fotograficamente. Seguire altri fotografi della tua stesso genere ti aiutare a confrontarti e scoprire nuove tecniche di fotografia, postproduzione, attrezzature e trucchetti vari. Le persone ambiziose hanno sete di nuovi input e vogliono sempre fare un passo avanti piuttosto che restare fermi sul posto.
Andare avanti nel tuo settore significa continuare a studiare: la fotografia è un’arte in movimento, in continua evoluzione nell’attrezzatura e nel linguaggio. Si evolve o si involve. Si concretizza nel suo fare e diventa astratta nel suo significare. Bisogna seguirla, aggiornarsi, tenersi costantemente informati e soprattutto, studiare: studiare le tecniche, il linguaggio, i modi di esporre, di raccontare, di produrre.
Vorrei sottolineare una cosa che mi sta a cuore e che mi è stata insegnata da tutti i maestri che ho incontrato nel mio cammino: già solo guardando un’immagine significa studiare la fotografia! Si studia la tecnica con cui è stata eseguita, il suo significato, la luce e le ombre che l’hanno posta in essere, se a colori o bianco e nero, i soggetti, la suo forma (argomento che tratterò in seguito), significato iconico e iconologico.
Mettiamoci in testa che essere fotografi non si racchiude in un semplice click, non si esaurisce con la pubblicazione. Credere di essere fotografi perché si ricevono like sui social è la morte dell’arte fotografica, è la tomba della teoria dell’evoluzione darwiniana, è il non sense dell’accezione artistica di un oltre un secolo di fotografia. Non basta avere una macchina fotografica in mano per essere fotografi, non basta esporre una mostra per diventare autori. Bisogna sapere e per sapere bisogna studiare.
Oltre al corso di fotografia base e quelli di approfondimento di settore (ritratto, still life, street photography, moda, architettura, ecc) bisogna studiare i grandi autori; la storia della fotografia che ci ha portato fino a oggi; le grandi invenzioni che ci hanno fatto arrivare a godere della fotografia in ogni luogo e in a ogni istante del produrre una fotografia; i linguaggi della fotografia: reportagistica, autoriale, contemporanea; gli autori contemporanei; la post produzione con un occhio di riguardo al colore; e potrei continuare…credo, però, vi basti per poter metabolizzare che di strada ce n’è in fotografia da vagliare e seguire. Tutto dipende (banale ma doveroso) da quanto siamo ambiziosi, cioè dalla voglia e volontà di andare avanti e dalla sete di sapere.

Study photography
Studying photography means delving into a vast territory where guiding your path is more a question of taste and personality than of course of study like any other sector.
Choosing to delve into a specific type of photography allows you to be part of a niche or a large group that helps you grow photographically. Following other photographers of the same genre will help you compare and discover new photography techniques, postproduction, equipment and various tricks. Ambitious people are thirsty for new input and always want to take a step forward rather than stay in place.
Getting ahead in your field means continuing to study: photography is an art in motion, constantly evolving in equipment and language. It evolves or becomes involved. It materializes in its doing and becomes abstract in its meaning. You have to follow it, keep yourself updated, keep yourself constantly informed and above all, study: study the techniques, the language, the ways of exhibiting, telling and producing.
I would like to underline something that is close to my heart and that was taught to me by all the masters I have met on my journey: just looking at an image means studying photography! We study the technique with which it was performed, its meaning, the light and shadows that brought it into being, whether in color or black and white, the subjects, its form (a topic I will discuss later), meaning iconic and iconological.
Let’s get it into our heads that being a photographer doesn’t end in a simple click, it doesn’t end with publication. Believing you are photographers because you receive them as they do on social media is the death of photographic art, it is the tomb of the theory of Darwinian evolution, it is the nonsense of the artistic acceptance of over a century of photography. It’s not enough to have a camera in your hand to be a photographer, it’s not enough to exhibit an exhibition to become an author. You have to know and to know you have to study.
In addition to the basic photography course and the in-depth courses in the sector (portrait, still life, street photography, fashion, architecture, etc.) you need to study the great authors; the history of photography that has brought us to today; the great inventions that have made us enjoy photography in every place and in every moment of producing a photograph; the languages of photography: reportage, authorial, contemporary; contemporary authors; post production with an eye to color; and I could continue… I think, however, it is enough for you to be able to metabolize that there is a lot of road in photography to follow and follow. It all depends (trivial but necessary) on how ambitious we are, that is, on the desire and will to move forward and on the thirst for knowledge.
