Oggi volevo parlare di fotografia onirica, ma sono stata catturata da un autore importante e profondo: Rodney Smith.
Per definizione, la fotografia onirica mostra ciò che l’animo umano vive nel mondo dei sogni. Tecnicamente le immagini risultano, infatti, sfuocate e in parte mostrano elementi di un sogno confuso e quasi senza senso. Sono immagini concettuali, che richiamo la significazione più profonda del subconscio.
In altri casi, come per Rodney Smith, l’immagine onirica mostra con chiarezza ciò che il subconscio ha sognato e lo mostra con ironia e una profonda arte fazione, utilizzando uno storytelling soggettivo, personale, unico nel suo genere.
La fotografia di Rodeny Smith rappresenta ciò che di più difficile la mente umana potrebbe partorire: attraverso la sua visione onirica del mondo racconta storie a noi più o meno conosciute.
Ispirato dalle opere esposte al MOMA di New York, impara l’arte della fotografia da giovane presso Walker Evans. Tratta subito di argomenti che riguardano l’animo umano vivendo prima in Medio Oriente, grazie a una borsa di studio; poi in sud America, Haiti e Galles: approfondisce, così, temi di vita di lavoratori e agricoltori attraverso ritratti profondi e incisivi.
Influenzato dalla tecnica di lavoro di Ansel Adams, studia e approfondisce l’utilizzo della luce, con chiaroscuri che mettono in risalto i soggetti delle sue fotografie e li definiscono da ciò che li circonda.
A metà degli anni ’80 viene notato da direttori artistici e redattori di riviste di moda e inizia la sua carriera per magazine importanti (New York Times, Vanity Fair) e case di moda d’élite (Paul Stuart, Ralph Lauren). Il suo stile ingegnoso ed elegante è un mix potente che ne specifica la sua personalità forte e determinata.
Rodney Smith predilige la fotografia stampata come creazione e risultato ultimo del suo impegno (n.d.a.): prima in piccolo formato con stampe alla gelatina d’argento montate su grandi tappetini bianchi; successivamente, con l’avvento della stampa a pigmenti d’archivio su carta da acquerello, ha finalmente abbracciato sia la stampa a colori che quella su larga scala con risultati sorprendenti.
E’ un artista che trova l’ispirazione dalla comprensione e significazione della sua stessa vita: approfondisce la natura del suo ego cercando di tramutare in arte le sue emozioni, i suoi sentimenti. Trova che il mondo non riesca a vedere oltre la triste realtà dei fatti, che nasconde la bellezza e la fantasia della vita.

Dreamlike photography by Rodnye Smith
Today I wanted to talk about dream photography, but I was captured by an important and profound author: Rodney Smith.
By definition, dream photography shows what the human soul experiences in the world of dreams. Technically the images are, in fact, blurry and partly show elements of a confused and almost senseless dream. They are conceptual images, which recall the deepest meaning of the subconscious.
In other cases, as for Rodney Smith, the dream image clearly shows what the subconscious has dreamed and shows it with irony and a profound art, using a subjective, personal, one-of-a-kind storytelling.
Rodeny Smith’s photography represents the most difficult thing the human mind could create: through his dreamlike vision of the world he tells stories more or less known to us.
Inspired by the works exhibited at the MOMA in New York, he learned the art of photography as a young man at Walker Evans. He immediately deals with topics that concern the human soul living first in the Middle East, thanks to a scholarship; then in South America, Haiti and Wales: he thus delves into the life themes of workers and farmers through profound and incisive portraits.
Influenced by the working technique of Ansel Adams, he studies and delves into the use of light, with chiaroscuro that highlights the subjects of his photographs and finds them from what surrounds them.
In the mid-80s he was noticed by artistic directors and editors of fashion magazines and began his career for important magazines (New York Times, Vanity Fair) and elite fashion houses (Paul Stuart, Ralph Lauren). His ingenious and elegant style is a powerful mix that specifies his strong and determined personality.
Rodney Smith prefers printed photography as the creation and ultimate result of his commitment (editor’s note): first in small format with gelatin silver prints mounted on large white mats; Subsequently, with the advent of archival pigment printing on watercolor paper, he finally embraced both color and large-scale printing with astonishing results.
He is an artist who finds inspiration from the understanding and meaning of life itself: he delves into the nature of his ego trying to transform his emotions, his feelings into art. He finds that the world cannot see beyond the sad reality of the facts, which hides the beauty and fantasy of life.
